Commentary
In 'Encrusted Field,' Susan Beiner takes us on a walk through a richly varied landscape. In fact a walk through a field inspired this composition. The part of the work near the top suggests a distant view across the field and is more monochromatic in color. As your eyes gaze downward, you encounter a more colorful view and numerous treasures at your feet as if you were walking through a field. Beiner suggests the fascinating complexity and ever-varied details of the landscapes we traverse through in life. The treasures that she alludes to are personal: Meaningful objects from her life and childhood, like shells from the New Jersey shore where she grew up, hardware from Detroit where she lived for over 10 years, and a gear from the Archie Bray Foundation in Montana where she finished making 'Encrusted Field.'
