Rupert Deese
Modern and Contemporary Post-World War II 1945 - present Studio Pottery Ceramist
American, (July 16, 1924–2010) Having first shown and acquired Rupert Deese's work in 1956, the Long Beach Museum of Art enjoys a long-standing relationship with this fine Southern California ceramist. Deese has said: "I have made an effort to develop a series of useful ceramic vessels which exploit the particular visual and tactile qualities of stoneware clays and glazes, always bearing in mind that if an object pretends to function, it should be enjoyable to use as well as to see." Born in Guam in 1924, Rupert Deese graduated from Pomona College in 1950 and from the Claremont Graduate School in 1957. Having shared a studio with Harrison McIntosh since 1950, Deese has produced a consistent body of work which is classically serene in form and subtly nuanced in color. Awards for his work began with a prize at the 21st Ceramic National in 1960. His work was included in the Scripps College Ceramic Annuals in 1952, 1954, and 2004. Rupert Deese writes, “If the thing has some enduring appeal, that’s good. Clay lasts a long time.” His interest in functional ceramics is enhanced by his attention to form and texture. Deese worked for a time for Franciscan Pottery while never abandoning his own potter’s wheel and always mixing his own clay at his studio. In his studio work, his ceramics are ripe with organic forms, harmonious glazes and burnished surfaces.
