Alexej Jawlensky
20th Century Modern Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Four; The Blue Rider) Painter
Russian born, (March 13, 1864–March 15, 1941) Born in Russia, Alexej Jawlensky (1864 - 1941) studied at the Imperial Art Academy in Moscow in 1890 with noted Russian Realist painter Ilya Repin. He left the academy and moved with fellow artist Marianne von Werefkin to Munich in 1896 where he met fellow Russian emigre Vasily Kandinsky who became his life-long friend. In 1910, Jawlensky moved to Paris where he met Henri Matisse and became enchanted by this French artist's use of rich, non-descriptive color. From that moment on, vibrant color became the central component of Jawlensky's work. In 1914, at the outbreak of the First World War, Jawlensky, as a Russian citizen, was forced to leave his home in Munich and move to Switzerland. During this period -- from 1914 to 1917 -- as he painted the landscape around his home in Saint Prex, Jawlensky's work evolved from landscape imagery to complete abstraction. The five paintings assembled here, which Jawlensky called "Variations," document this important development in his work. During this period Jawlensky emerges as one of the great colorists of the 20th century.
