John McLaughlin
20th Century Modern Hard-Edge Painting Painting
American, (May 21, 1898–March 22, 1976) Boston-born John McLaughlin came to painting after a career studying art history and collecting Asian art. He set up an art gallery in Boston. In his travels to Japan and China, McLaughlin developed his facility for the Japanese language and when he enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves, he was stationed at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked. Later released from service, McLaughlin was still eager to employ his language skills and went with his wife to the internment camp Manzanar in the Owens Valley, seeking employment that eventually led to his reassignment as Chief of the South East Asia Translation Center in New Delhi. After his service he moved to Laguna Beach in 1946 and then Dana Point, where at 50 years of age he took up painting full-time. It was his experience of Asian art that most informed his painting. The “marvelous void” emphasized by the Zen masters is the large interval between objects which can be more significant than the object itself to induce a state of contemplation. At the Long Beach Museum of Art, McLaughlin’s work was included in a group exhibition of early California Modernists in 1957, "Artists of Southern California—II: Painting," in 1958, and a one person exhibition in 1960. McLaughlin was part of the “Hard-Edge” movement that secured national and international attention in 1959 with the exhibition, Four Abstract Classicists, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. These four artists including Karl Benjamin and Lorser Feitelson, whose work is presented nearby, carved their own path in contrast to the popular trend of Abstract Expression-ism in the 1950s.
