Ben Messick
20th Century California Regionalist Painter
American, (January 9, 1891–December 31, 1981) Ben Messick was a renowned artist, teacher, lecturer and demonstrator who lived in Long Beach for several years. Among his accomplishments are also etching and lithography. Born near Strafford, Missouri, he received his art training at the Los Angeles School of Art and Design, Chouinard Art Institute (now Otis Art Institute) and while studying in France on a three year scholarship. His works have been exhibited widely throughout the U. S., including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the De Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco, the Library of Congress in Washington D. C., Carnegie Institute in Troy, Michigan and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D. C. He has had over fifty solo exhibitions and has participated in more than three-hundred juried exhibitions.
