Gustavo Perez
Contemporary 1980 - present Studio Ceramist
Mexican, b. 1950 Born in Mexico City in 1950, Perez studied Engineering, Mathematics and Philosophy from 1967 to 1971. He later studied ceramics with Enrique Rangel, Felipe Barcenas, and Martin Lima at the School of Design and Art in Mexico City from 1971 to 1973. In 1980 he received a scholarship from the Dutch government to study at the Saint Joost Academy in Breda. He remained there from 1980 to 1983. While in Holland he met and came to admire the work of Alev Siesbye, a Turkish-born, Danish-trained artist. Siesbye is represented in the collection of the Long Beach Museum of Art by a stunning hand-coiled bowl. Siesbye had a profound influence on the direction Perez chose to pursue in his own work. Siesbye's emphasis on simplified form, volume, and massing exerted a particularly deep effect on Perez's work. Pérez studied engineering, mathematics and philosophy at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico from 1961 - 1971, he then studied ceramics at the School of Design and Art in Mexico.
