Gunther Gerzso
20th Century Modern Painter
Mexican, (June 17, 1915–April 21, 2000) Gerzso was born in Mexico City of Hungarian-German parents. He attended school in Switzerland where he lived with his uncle, an art historian, collector and dealer and where he met many modern artists. When he finished his education, he embarked on a career of set design for theater and films by Mexican, American, Spanish and French directors, and where he met many Surrealist artists in Mexico City. Before he retired from his work as a set designer in 1962, he exhibited his paintings at the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1939. His works reflected European modernist ideas of Cubism and Surrealism melded with his interest in Mayan architecture, Pre-Colombian art, and the jungles and deserts of his homeland.
