Bob Stocksdale
20th Century Modern turned wood
American, (May 25, 1913–January 6, 2003) In 1958, Stocksdale’s expressive work in wood was presented in his first solo museum exhibition at the Long Beach Museum of Art. Stocksdale turned his first bowl in an internment camp for World War II conscientious objectors. He went on to refine and invent many wood turning techniques in a wide variety of hardwoods at his studio in Berkeley. In 1998 Stocksdale received a lifetime achievement award from the Collectors of Wood Art, a 1995 Gold Medal from the American Crafts Council, 1985 Living Treasure of California award, 1978 Fellow of the American Crafts Council and the Biennial Award “Master of the Medium from the Renwick Alliance” in 2003.
