June Wayne
20th Century Modern Painter, printmaker
American, (March 7, 1918–2011) A solo exhibition, Prints and Drawings by June Wayne was presented at the Long Beach Museum of Art in 1959—the same year that Wayne created what became the legendary Tamarind Lithography Workshop to revive that art form. Wayne had been exploring lithography with master printer Lynton Kistler in Los Angeles since 1948. She was also producing prints in Paris and Berlin. A prolific artist with a long career, Wayne was always an activist on many fronts, and participated, along with John Leeper and others, in the successful fight in 1952 to force the Los Angeles City Council to withdraw a resolution declaring modern artists “tools of the Kremlin.”
