Hans Burkhardt
20th Century Modern Painter, printmaker
Swiss-American, (December 20, 1904–April 22, 1994) In 1939 Burkhardt held his first one-man show in Los Angeles produced by artist Lorser Feitelson. Burkhardt helped to forge a distinctive style of Abstract Expressionism on the West Coast. He drew motifs from nature, internalizing them and creating a highly personal, abstract realization of the scene or the event. His work was selected for the Arts of Southern California—II: Painting at the Long Beach Museum of Art in 1958 as one of the group of established “Distinguished” artists.
