The lithographic crayon, normally used to draw on either metal or stone lithographic plates, is used here by Adams to draw directly on paper. The crayon can be smudged with a finger or cloth to achieve gray tints. This work can be compared to the drawing of "Masts and Buildings" by Adams and note the difference in the type of lines and tones.
