Commentary
Bermudez described Raku Waves as a “mural” evoking the notion that it is a small sliver of a grander view and that the observer may choose to “continue the image or not in his or her mind.” Raku Waves, like the ripples in the sand of our “long” beach, suggests the endless continuation of the power of wind and wave. Bermudez elected to work with clay for its substantial presence and he writes that he “chose the raku process because, like the ocean, you can find very subtle colors, and also a very forceful and dynamic presence.” The raku process is a dynamic one in which the clay is heated and cooled comparatively quickly. The raku tradition dates to 16th-century Japan and is strongly connected with the philosophy of Zen Buddhism and the Tea Ceremony.
