Commentary
Depicting two figures with watering cans, moon phases and diamonds, this shino glazed stone-ware platter was acquired by Frieda Bradsher from the Northwest Craft Center and Gallery in 1999. Shino glaze originated in Japan during the late 16th - early 17th century and was characterized by the milky white quality of the glaze. A glaze resembling the ancient Shino was developed in the 1970s, called American Shino, and can take on a variety of colors in addition to the milky white, as seen in this work.
