Commentary
Sailors were frequently the subject of 19th century Staffordshire ceramics. During this period, the British Navy was strong and its leaders gained national prominence. In an island nation that still depended heavily on its Navy for defense and its commercial fleet for economic prosperity, sailors were considered popular heroes. 'Sailor's Farewell' and 'Sailor's Return' have particular significance as a pair in that together they extol the virtues of personal sacrifice as the sailor leaves for the sea and of the sanctity of hearth and home, and as the weary sailor returns to his faithful wife and family.
