Commentary
Comprised of a bear and lion next to a man, chimpanzee and monkey, all wearing hats and dressed in gentlemanly attire, this circus group forms quite a comical crew. The odd assembly may present - like the prints of 18th-century British artists William Hogarth (1697 - 1764) and Thomas Rowlandson (1756 - 1827) - a satirical commentary on the grand manners and exaggerated styles of 18th-century England or it may simply be a depiction of a group of actual circus performers on their way to a fair.
