The story of the 'Raising of Lazarus' is recounted in the Bible in the Book of John. It is the story of the healing and redemptive power of faith.

Lazarus, a close friend of Jesus, had died and his body had been entombed for four days when Jesus visited Lazarus's sister Martha. When Martha accused Jesus of neglecting his friend and allowing him to die, he told her, "Your brother will rise again...I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?" When both Martha and her sister Mary had confirmed their faith, Jesus visited Lazarus's tomb and commanded him to live by saying, "Lazarus, come out!" Lazarus, wrapped in bandages and cloth, arose from his tomb.

This Staffordshire group depicts the most dramatic moment in the story - the moment Lazarus emerges from the tomb and is restored to life.
