The subject refers to a period in the artist's life when she had strep throat. In reflecting on the experience, Kolodziejski likened the pain in her throat to the constant pounding of and African drum. She used this unusual association in Happy Viruses in which she portrays African drummers on one side of the vessel and a balding man whose throat is being inspected using a flashlight and tounge depresor on the opposite. This juxtaposition of imagery gives the vessel its almost surreal power and alludes to Kolodziejski's mastery of story telling.
