Commentary
The abstract dabs of paint, transparent colors, and areas of unpainted paper in Wakowitz' "Bathers" suggest an effort to incorporate formally the lessons gleaned from scrutiny of Cezanne's work; like Cezanne's his colors are limpid and reflective. Restrained by inhibition or perhaps fear of scandal, neither painter posed nude models out-of-doors. The "Bathers" of each are based on memory rather than direct observation and evince distinctly nonsensuous approaches, the figures being inert and detached from life. Although Walkowitz achieved a sense of expansive scale in his "Bathers," he did not transpose this vision to oils until very late in his career.
