In the early 1920s, Jawlensky returned to Wiesbaden, Germany where he would remain for the rest of his life. By then he was in dire financial straits and thought that a production of a lithograph portfolio in 1922 would be a new source of income. The portfolio consisted of spare studies of heads in formal orientations, included to the left and right, with closed and open eyes.
