Commentary
Staffordshire ceramics often depict various significant moments in the life of Christ. Here, Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus are shown on their way into Egypt to save the child from being killed by King Herod. According to the Bible, when King Herod died, an angel appeared to Joseph instructing him to "take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead."
