A highly popular Shakespearean actress and singer, Maria Foote (1797 - 1867) led as colorful a life off-stage as on. A great beauty, she had numerous suitors, two illegitimate children, and in 1831 left the stage to marry Charles Stanhope, 4th Earl of Harrington.

Costumed portraits of prominent actors and actresses such as this portrait of Maria Foote dressed as Shakespeare's Juliet had been popular in England since the mid-18th century.
