Commentary
In David Gilhooly's "Bread Frog as a Bake Sale," a joyous frog man and woman celebrate their marriage vows standing on a large loaf of bread shaped like a "bread frog" with poppy seeds on its back. Multiple references to human activities like bake sales and weddings are contained in this whimsical ceramic sculpture. An earthenware ceramic shaped to look like a sculpted poppy-seed bread loaf in the shape of a frog, holds a colorful, happy bake sale on its back. Among the baked goods is a wedding cake with the happy frog bride and groom. David Gilhooly, one of the original California Funk artists, uses food and frogs as his expressive motifs with frogs often portraying human foibles and fantasies.
