Commentary
Christ's visit to the Garden of Gethsemane represents one of the most profoundly moving passages in the New Testament of the Bible - the moment when Jesus recognizes he is alone, he has been betrayed, and he will soon die: "Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane and he said to his disciples, 'Sit here while I go yonder and pray." And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zeb'edee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. He said to them, 'My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here and watch with me.' He then went a little farther, fell on his face and prayed, 'My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt." This image - complete with figure holding a cup of wine, a symbol of the body and blood of Christ - captures some of the torment of that moment in the Garden of Gethsemane.
