Commentary
Sir Robert Peel (1788 - 1850) was a prominent 19th century British political leader. He became Home Secretary in 1822 and among his many accomplishments were the institution of a number of important reforms in the criminal justice system and the creation of a Metropolitan Police force who were nick-named "bobbies" after Peel's first name.

Somewhat ironically, given the heroic nature of this equestrian portrait, Peel died in 1850 of injuries resulting from a fall from a horse.
