Commentary
Victor Emanuel II (1820 - 1878) was the first King of a united Italy - the modern Italy as we know it today. With the devoted leadership of his great military champion Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807 - 1882), Victor Emanuel's armies swept French forces out of Italy and established a unified government on the Italian peninsula.
