In both title and appearance, "Flora Fauna" simultaneously alludes to a shrub, a torso, and an underwater plant form. Bertoia said of the piece: "The bronze registers something of the seven years Brigitta (his wife) and I have lived in California...maybe something suggestive of life in the Pacific." Consisting of many individual bronze wires welded to one central core, Flora Fauna vibrates and sounds when stroked bringing together aural and visual experiences in one single work of art.
