Commentary
Delisle was a prolific artist who used about 1,500 pounds of English porcelain a year. As a student she began working with stoneware, though she appreciated the beauty of porcelain at an early age when she admired her grandmother's translucent, delicate teacups. Delisle was fascinated with the inherent texture of porcelain and chose not to glaze her vessels, which might hide the surface quality. The white line that you see in this vessel is uncovered porcelain. She uses black and cobalt blue pigmented slips--thin slurries of clay with pigment, not glaze--which she applies by hand while the piece is spinning on the wheel. After firing, the pieces are sanded smooth under water with fine sandpaper, then fired. The finish is matte and may be made silky by rubbing with beeswax.
