Commentary
The gray-green body of this chalice features six female figures standing shoulder-to-shoulder. Their long black hair, wide dark eyes and clasped hands exhibit a strong Byzantine quality, recalling the folk art of the artist’s native Poland. Polia came to America in 1924, settling first in Chicago, where she studied painting and pottery-making. Eventually she and her husband moved to Los Angeles where her work gained a wide audience.
