Commentary
This monumental vase is a fine example of Laeuger's early work. The raised surface, which gives the piece a rich tactile, sculptural quality, is created through application of thin clay slips applied prior to the final glazes. Laeuger was interested in and influenced by Near Eastern ceramic techniques and by the floral and vegetal design motifs seen on Near Eastern ceramics. This vase's lush lemon and leaf design may also reflect Laeuger's awareness of the innovations of French Fauve artist Henri Matisse.
