Commentary
Although the secrets of porcelain production had been known in China for centuries, it was not until the early 18th century that alchemist Johann Friedrich Botteger, under the protection of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, discovered a formula for European porcelain. In 1710, the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory was established in Albrechtburg Castle in Meissen, near Dresden in Germany. With royal patronage the Meissen Porcelain factory created innovative techniques to decorate and produce ceramics. Flower décor called Meissen-Manner Flower painting that at the beginning was inspired by the East Asian trade and later would develop from mid-eighteenth century painterly styles, became internationally popular. Look for the floral and animal images in this charming teapot’s spout.
