Commentary
The luminous color on this platter is the result of combining two traditional techniques in a non-traditional way. "Terra sigillata" is a fine orange-red clay slip that was used on ancient Roman tableware. Tetkowski sprays "terra sigillata" on his large platters and fires them in a salt kiln, but at a low rather than high temperature for an unglazed effect. The color that you see is not painted on, but is produced in the kiln firing. Tetkowski is interested in the properties of clays from around the world to express the interconnection among all people.
